CHAPTER VI

CHAPTER VI
FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
Summary of Findings
This chapter contains the summary of findings as well as the conclusion drawn and the recommendations made based on the findings of the study.
The following were drawn based on the data gathered:
1. The researchers discovered that 20(100%) out of 20 respondents use the internet not just for academics but also in surfing the internet.
2. The researchers discovered that 25% of the respondents spend 11-15 hours in using Facebook. This is not alarming result since it only constitutes 8.3% of the number of hours an individual have in a day.
3. The researchers found out that the different Facebook elements do not affect romantic relationships from the following findings:
3.1 The data gathered from the survey implies that the respondents’ romantic relationship is not affected by the wall posts they get and give in Facebook as shown in Table 5 they got an average weighted mean of 2.9 on both positive and negative statement about wall posting.
3.2 Furthermore, the respondents from the survey said that photo sharing in Facebook enhances their relationship based from their average weighted mean of 3.5 on the positive traits of Photo sharing which is relatively higher compared to the average mean of 3.0 on its negative attributes.
3.3 Moreover, the researchers found out that generally, the respondents are also neutral when it comes to the effect of Instant Messaging in Facebook on their romantic relationships since they had an average weighted mean of 3.3 in both negative and positive statements as shown in Table 7. This implies that chatting does not strengthen nor destroy romantic relationship of users.
3.4 Lastly, the researchers found out based from the survey that updating Facebook status enhances romantic relationships of Facebook users since based on table 8 they got an average mean of 3.9 to positive statements relatively high compared with the negative statements’ mean of 3.0.
4. In addition, the researchers found out that:
4.1 There are eight out of 20 respondents who agreed that Facebook does enhance and strengthen romantic relationships. Furthermore, none of the respondents strongly agree that Facebook strengthens romantic relationships.
4.2 Lastly, eight out 0f 20 respondents agreed that Facebook destroys romantic relationships and that five percent of the respondents said that they strongly disagree.

Conclusion
Based on the data gathered, the researchers concluded that all computer science students that have internet access do have a Facebook account and that they also spend time using Facebook in maintaining or improving their relationships outside the World Wide Web. Moreover, it is further concluded that Facebook does not play any significant role in romantic relationships of University of the Philippines Cebu College computer science students. But contrary to it, there are features in Facebook that enhances their relationships such as Photo sharing and constant update of status. But these features do not take charge on their behaviour towards their partners, thus McLuhan’s Theory of Technological Determinism does not apply here.
Furthermore, this implies that UP Cebu College computer science students can manage and balance very well their virtual or online world with their physical or real life interactions.

RECOMMENDATIONS
With the aide of this study’s findings and conclusion, the following are recommended:
1. This research encourages the readers to balance their virtual social interaction with their face to face conversation.
2. The proponents recommend to the UP Cebu College computer science students to have a sense of privacy among them because Facebook being as public as it is, invites invaders and stalkers that may cause threats to the users.
3. With the emergence of Social Networking sites, UP Cebu College computer science students should value real interactions or socializations than surfing the internet.
4. This study needs to widen its scope because there are new trending social networking sites such as Twitter that might also cause a different effect.
5. To the future researchers, they can improve this study by increasing the number of respondents because the respondents of this study is limited to UP Cebu college computer science students only. They might as well include respondents from other courses.
